Ajinkyatara
Fort: on one of the seven mountains surrounding the city of Satara in the
Sahayadri Mountains of Maharashtra, India. The fort is located at Ajinkyatara
Mountain, which is 3,300 feet high. There are number of water tanks inside the
fort for storing water. So, there is no scarcity of water even as the fort is
in the higher place The view from atop the fort is mesmerizing, offering you a
panoramic scene of the entire horizon of Satara City.

Ajinkyatara was constructed by Bhoj Raj II of Panhala between 1178 and
1193. Satara was declared as capital of Marathas 1698. Earlier this fort was
used as a prison. From 1580 to 1592, famous Chandbibi was kept as a prisoner on
this fort. Records state that in 1673, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj took control
of this fort from Adil Shah of Bijapur, and further Aurangze ruled this fort
between 1700 and 1706. The fort at Ajinkyatara was occupied by Shahu Maharaj in
1708 and it remained under the control of the Maratha ruler until the year
1818. After death of Shahu-II, the British captured the fort on 11th
February 1818.
